Depths of a burn

First-degree burns are confined to the epidermis.

Second-degree burns extend into the dermis (dermal burns).

Third-degree burns are “full thickness” through the epidermis and dermis.

Fourth-degree burns involve injury to underlying tissue structures such as muscle, tendons, and bone.
